Representatives of Dubrovnik airport on Thursday presented a project for the reconstruction and development of the airport in this southern Adriatic city until 2020, worth nearly EUR 220 million.

The project will apply for EU funding to cover construction works to reconstruct the existing building and construction of extensions to ensure safe and undisturbed functioning of the airport.

Presenting the project, the airport's director Roko Tolic said that compared to Zagreb airport which opted for a strategic partner and issuing a concession for the airport, Dubrovnik would rely on its own know-how and competencies and that he was certain the project would be granted EU funding.

Transport Minister Sinisa Hajdas Doncic praised the project and airport management underscoring that this was an excellent project focussing on three main aspects, safety, environment protection and energy efficiency.

"All these components have been evaluated well and the project itself has a high level which warrants it for EU funding. As Brussels is to decide on the project, I am convinced that the project will be granted the maximum amount requested as this is a project of exceptional importance for this part of Croatia and for Europe", said Hajdas Doncic. He called on other airport managements around the country to follow suit.

Over 1.5 million passengers passed through Dubrovnik airport last year which is the highest number since the airport was built in 1962.
