Assistant Minister for Maritime Traffic Mario Babić said in Split on Wednesday that Croatia would put a proposal to neighboring countries that the Adriatic Sea be declared a sensitive area in order to improve its protection.

Addressing an international conference on maritime science, Babić said the Croatian authorities were currently introducing a navigation control system in Croatia's territorial waters by installing radar sets.

He said that this EUR 10 million project was one of the biggest projects in the last 40 years.

Babić added that 60 percent of boats sailing in the Adriatic belonged to countries outside the European Union.

Some Croatian maritime experts, who participated in the conference, warned that Croatia had concluded detrimental agreements with neighbors regarding sea border demarcation. (Hina)
