Vinkovci-Osijek rail service restored after 17 years

After 17 years the railway traffic between the two eastern Croatian cities of Osijek and Vinkovci resumed on Sunday morning. Transport along the Vinkovci-Osijek railway route, which was inaugurated in 1910, was stopped on 21 August 1991 at the outbreak of the Homeland War in eastern Slavonia.

Traffic was re-established on Sunday morning with the passenger train no. 6300 which transported passengers from Vinkovci to Osijek.

Re-inauguration ceremonies will be held on Wednesday at the Vinkovci Railway Station.

Sections and some train stations of this railway route were destroyed in the war and during the occupation of some areas by Serb rebels until the beginning of 1998.

The reconstruction cost EUR 12.5 million and was funded from the state budget.

Before the war, 4,164 passenger and 4,178 cargo trains ran annually on that this route, carrying 585,230 passengers and 6.94 million tons of cargo.
