The Scandinavian airline SAS initiated the first direct flight from Stockholm to Zagreb on Monday when a plane carrying some 70 passengers landed at Zagreb airport.
The introduction of the Stockholm-Zagreb flight is the result of a rise in interest in Croatia on the part of Swedish business people and tourists, said Johanna Orth, an advisor on trade affairs at the Swedish Embassy in Zagreb.
Speaking at a news conference, Orth said that many Swedish companies were already operating in Croatia and that the volume of business would increase with the upcoming arrival of the Swedish furniture chain IKEA, a possible contract on the purchase of Gripen military planes and Croatia's admission to the EU.
Boeing 737 planes will connect Stockholm and Zagreb three times a week from March to October, said Maria Lundquist-Forsberg of SAS.
Tickets can be booked on the airline's web page www.flysas.com. During the promotional period, one-way tickets will be available at a price of 78 euros, all taxes included.
During the summer, SAS will also introduce flights between Göteborg and Split, while keeping the Stockholm-Split service, which will make it the biggest air carrier in direct air traffic between Sweden and Croatia, reporters were told.
SAS transports around 6 million passengers annually and has a fleet of 42 planes and 2,500 employees. (Hina)
