Govt. Proposes White & Case as Legal Consultant for Telecommunications

Keeping the telecommunication infrastructure under government control is of general interest and crucial importance so that the infrastructure could be used by all operators, Transport Minister Božidar Kalmeta said at a government session on Wednesday reporting about a new legal consultant for the issue of ownership over telecommunication-distribution cables.

Of six interested consulting agencies, White & Case was suggested as the best choice and the agency is expected to give its opinion within 60 days, Kalmeta said.

He added that the government and the Telecommunications Agency would agree on models of management of telecommunication-distribution cables.

The minister said that the government had liberalized to the maximum the telecommunications market, with 17 fixed telephony operators, of which five are active, and three mobile operators.

This has led to a 6 to 22 percent drop in prices of fixed telephony services and to up to a 50 percent drop in mobile operators' prices.
