Croatian telephone operators will not have to charge any more the monthly telephone subscription of HRK 60 (EUR 8) according to the draft proposal of the Law on changes and amendments to the Telecommunications Law, which the Government has submitted for Parliamentary approval.
Although the Constitutional Court in 2003 abolished the telephone subscription, telecom monopoly T-HT was left with the possibility of charging for access to the telecommunication system, which in reality substituted the telephone subscription.
In practice, according to the Government proposal, the telephone subscription in Croatia would not be obligatory, although it is charged in all European countries (ranging for EUR 6.70 in the Czech Republic to EUR 13.30 in Germany).
However, somebody will still have to bear the costs for maintaining the telecom system (T-HT’s network), which could translate into higher prices for phone calls. Representatives of new fixed line operator Portus say that the best solution would be that there is not telephone subscription, i.e. that users pay only for the telephone impulses consumed, charged per second.
