Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor on Wednesday formally marked the beginning of the reconstruction and upgrading of the Batahovina ferry pier in the port of Gruz in Dubrovnik.
The EUR 8 million investment includes the construction of a new 220-metre operational pier for cruise ships, and the project is financed by a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The work should be completed by the end of September.
PM Kosor said the project was bringing together all who were in favour of Dubrovnik's economic development.
Upon the completion of the first stage of the project, the pier will be extended by an additional 400 metres, which will cost 21 million euros.
In terms of the number of arrivals of cruise ships, Dubrovnik was the fourth Mediterranean port in 2010 and the tenth port in the world, with annual revenues amounting to 50-60 million euros.
