Presentation of Strategy for Developement of Split Port

The strategy for the development of the city port was presented today at Split.
 
The new strategic document will insist on exploiting all benefits of the city port area and on correcting all infrastructural deficiencies which prevent Split from becoming one of the busiest ports along the Adriatic Coast. Currently, with the transport of 3.5 million passengers and 700 thousand vehicles, this port occupies the third position in the Mediterranean area (after Naples and the Pyreneans). The plan for the next ten years is to increase the number of transported passenger up to even seven million.
 
According to the architect Jerko Rošin it is necessary to relocate the railway station and the building "Dalmacijavino" in order to create a wide open space. All of that is being supported by the PM Ivo Sanader who attended the presentation of the new Strategy. The new wide space would make it possible to construct objects like business centers, hotels and necessary parking lots.
 
About 90% of the port"s transport activities are based on foreign transport and 55% of the total ship transport is being achieved via the route Split – Brač. Since 183 cruisers have visited Split during the last tourist season, the Port Authority decided to construct a new external pier until the beginning of the next season, in the value of HRK 45 million.
 
The Strategy also foresees the building of an international terminal and external berths along the mole; the Strategy also suggests to enlarge the three existing piers and to construct wharves for smaller cruisers along the western coast. All of that demands the solving of road problems, as well as the usage of the capacities of the port "Lora" and the terminal at Resnik.
 
The team working on the Strategy wants to relocate the international transport performed by large ships to the Northern Port and to start using the wharf at Resnik. That location is very close to the airport, so the guests of charter flights would have a direct catamaran line to the islands and would not have to travel all over Split. 
 
According to Branko Grgić, director of the Split Port Authority and member of the Assembly for the production of the Strategy explains that the means for the financing of the Strategy, i.e. concrete projects based on the Strategy, would have to come from state budgets, EU funds, and public – private partnerships.

The whole Assembly is put together from various professionals covering the fields of architecture, economics, maritime law, culture, finances and other.
