Croatian Railways passenger transport operator (HZPP) has secured funding so the production of 12 electric trains for urban commuting and regional transport continues, HZPP said on Wednesday.
The production of 11 electric trains by the Koncar Electric Vehicles company will be funded by a loan of €57.2 million from the European Company for the Financing of Railroad Rolling Stock (
EUROFIMA), and one train will be financed by a loan of €5.2 million from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (
IBRD).
Today's signing of the addendum to the Agreement continued the implementation of the Agreement with KEV, and it was signed by the President of the Management Board of HŽPP, Željko Ukić and members of the Management Board, Mladen Lugarić and Damir Rubčić and the President of the Management Board of Končar - Electric Vehicles, Josip Ninić. The signing was also attended by the State Secretary for Infrastructure, Tomislav Mihotić from the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure and the Deputy President of the Management Board of Končar - Electrical Industry, Ivan Bahun.
It has been planned that the first of the 12 new trains will be delivered in 14 months, after which one train per month will be delivered in 2021 and 2022. Six electric trains will be produced for regional transport and six for urban and suburban transport.
The new electric trains will be able to drive 160 km/h and will be equipped with wheelchair ramps for entry and exit and storage space for bicycles. The trains will feature a modern heating and cooling system and video surveillance, and free internet access (WiFi) will be provided for passengers.
Station names will be announced via displays and speakers.
The HZPP and the Koncar Electric Vehicles signed a contract in January 2014 for the production of 44 trains.
In 2015 and 2016, a total of 20 electric trains were delivered for urban and suburban and regional transport, and one diesel electric train for regional transport, all of them financed by a loan from the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR).
From November 2019 to March 2020 four more diesel electric trains were delivered, financed by a IBRD loan.
In line with the financial plan of the HZPP for the 2020-2022 period the realisation of a contract with the Koncar Electric Vehicles has been planned, that is the delivery of another seven diesel electric trains, which are to start operating between 2021 and 2024.
In addition, a procurement process is underway for 21 electric trains to be financed by EU funds.
