(photo: FaH)The Croatian government and the city of Zagreb on Friday signed a protocol on the construction of a new passenger terminal and a new runway at Zagreb Airport, to be completed by 2011.

The value of the new terminal and the runway is estimated at EUR 212 million.

The government will cover 60% and the City of Zagreb 40% of the construction costs.

The protocol was signed by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic.

Sanader said that the current passenger terminal and the airport layout did not suit the needs of the Croatian capital, which he said needed a modern and bigger airport.

(photo: FaH)Zagreb Mayor Bandic said that two factors were limiting Zagreb's plans to become a regional transport, financial and business hub.

One factor is the city's inadequate airport, which will be replaced with a new one, and the other is lack of a congress centre, which will be built next year, the mayor said.

Zagreb Airport has been continually recording an increase in passenger transport. The millionth passenger this year was registered as early as July 11 and the airport management believes the turnover could reach two million by the end of the year. (Hina)
