Tunnel dug through Mount Biokovo, other construction works go on

A tunnel to connect the Imotski area and the Makarska Riviera was drilled through Mount Biokovo on Thursday, and other construction works continued on Friday.

The 4,250-metre tunnel is to have two driving lanes.

The project's chief architect, Ivan Galic of Konstruktor Inzenjering company, said the drilling of the tube for the future tunnel had been one of the most demanding endeavours.

Local authorities expressed hope that the construction of the tunnel, named Sv. Ilija (St. Elias), would not be halted due to state budgetary funds for the project having been reduced because of the ongoing recession.
