Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Božidar Kalmeta briefed Macedonian Transport Minister Milo Janakieski in Zagreb on Tuesday about the Croatian road-building model, with an emphasis on highways, Kalmeta's ministry stated in a press release.

Croatia is the region's leader in highway construction, so we came to see your experience given that we are preparing to give concessions for the construction of highways, said Janakieski.

Kalmeta said that the 40-km Šestanovac-Ravča section of the Zagreb-Split-Dubrovnik highway would be opened for traffic by the end of the year, whereby Croatia will have 1,182 km of highways of the 1,365 km envisaged by the Transport Development Strategy.

Speaking of highway construction and maintenance in the 2009-12 period, Kalmeta said the government would adopt a programm for that in 2009, and not by the end of the year, due to the financial situation.
