Transport Minister Bozidar Kalmeta on Friday opened a HRK 394 million, 8.8 km dual carriageway section on the Rijeka-Zagreb highway, between Vrbovsko and Bosiljevo, saying it was of the utmost importance for safe traffic.

The minister announced that the remaining 44 km of dual carriageway on the highway connecting the capital of Zagreb with the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka was expected to be finished by the end of 2008.

The inauguration of today's section marked the end of the II A stage of works on the Rijeka-Zagreb highway, providing more than 100 km of new dual carriageway with 12 tunnels, 26 viaducts and six bridges, said Jurica Prskalo, CEO of the Rijeka-Zagreb Highway company.

He added that an average 17,000 vehicles passed along the highway daily and as many as 27,000 during the summer. In this year's first five months, traffic went up 19% from the corresponding period in 2006. (EUR 1 = HRK 7.3)
