An agreement for a grant of HRK 2.8 million to prepare a transport development study for Karlovac County valued at HRK 3.4 million was signed on Thursday by Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Sinisa Hajdas Doncic and Karlovac County Prefect Ivan Vucic.

The study will serve as the basis for a strategic document to plan a sustainable transport system in the county, presenting public transport connections between towns and municipalities in that county and possible connections with neighbouring counties, particularly with Zagreb, Sisak and Rijeka.

The county has secured HRK 500,000 of its own funds and Vucic announced that a tender for the study would be advertised soon, which should resolve the summer traffic jams in Karlovac.

Once the study is completed, the county may apply for European Union funding, Vucic said.

Hajdas Doncic said that Karlovac County was one of ten local and regional government units that had received HRK 43 million to develop their transport masterplans.

If all the applications are successful and receive EU funding in the period 2014 - 2020, around HRK 1.6 billion could be invested in these projects across the country, he said.

Karlovac County is located along one of nine transport corridors that pass through Croatia, the one running from the Rijeka Port to Hungary. Projects related to these corridors, notably railway projects, are eligible to apply for EU funding in the amount of 85% of the project value.
