Ship stranded on northern island of Unije set afloat

The ship "Serine", which was stranded on the northern Croatian Adriatic island of Unije on January 22, was towed away on Sunday, said the spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Marina Halužan.

The vessel was set afloat by a tow boat of the Adriatic Maritime Service and staff of the Rijeka Port Authority. A company from Rijeka was hired in the event of a sea spill, but it did not occur.

Some of the ship's crew remained aboard the vessel, which will be towed away to Šibenik, where it will wait to be transferred to the Brodotrogir shipyard.

Most of the ship's cargo, consisting of timber, was previously reloaded, while the rest, consisting of sodium bicarbonate powder, has soaked up sea water and will be pumped out of the ship.

The 82-metre ship had been sailing from the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka to Algeria under the flag of Sierra Leone. The ship is owned by the "Anomyo Maritime Losa" shipping company. (Hina)
