Minister says safety on highways better than last year
Safety on all Croatian highways this year is better than last year, with fewer accidents and casualties, it was said at a meeting between Tourism Minister Damir Bajs and representatives of four companies operating the highways in the country, police officials and members of the Croatian Automobile Club.
The officials attending the meeting are members of a government commission in charge of monitoring road transport during the peak tourist season.
Bajs extended condolences to the families of people killed or injured in a train accident which happened near the costal city of Split on Friday, when a tilting train derailed near Kastela, some 20 kilometres from Split.
Six people were killed and 55 injured in the derailment.
The minister said that his ministry and the national tourism board had provided free accommodation for the victims' families who would arrive in Croatia.
He said that similar accidents could happen in any country, and that when they happened, it was important for relevant services to act efficiently and help the victims and tourists.
