Investing into rail network precondition for developing intermodal transport

Croatia's geographical position provides favourable conditions for the development of intermodal transport, and this potential can be used provided that the national railway network is modernised, heard a conference on intermodal transport, held in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The railway network has been neglected in the last decade with focus being placed on motorway construction, and therefore railway transport has become uncompetitive.

Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, who opened the conference, also called for greater investments in railways. He supported the idea of establishing an intermodal transport agency.

The share of railways in cargo transport fell from 39 percent in 1987 to 13 percent in 2007.

This bear evidence to under-investment in railways, said Zoran Popovac, CEO of the Croatian Railways public company.

The conference was held by the Intermodal Promotion Centre (OPC).
