International Meeting on Maritime Safety

The International Transport Workers" Federation (ITF), whose member is the Seafarers" Union of Croatia, is organizing in Dubrovnik from October 18th to 20th a meeting on maritime safety – the first one held outside of London, where the Federation"s headquarters is located.

The heads of the EU transport workers" unions, also including unions from other countries of the world, are discussing the employment of seafarers and maritime safety.

Captain Mario Babić, Assistant Minister for Maritime Traffic, Maritime Domain and Ports and Tatjana Krilić who is the Head of the Department for Maritime Inspection Activities, reported on the measures Croatia was conducting with the goal of enhancing maritime safety and the status of Croatian seafarers. Captain Babić stated that the cooperation with the Seafarers" Union was very successful and how most of the regulations had been installed with the help of the unions and the shipping companies.

Captain Mario Babić also said: “On 17 November in Dubrovnik, we are presenting the Croatian pre-accession maritime strategy which contains all measures that we have to produce until joining the EU. All that will be quickly achieved and without further problems we will be able to implement those regulations into the Croatian Legislation”.

He announced the organization of public tenders for scholarships dedicated to students and high school pupils, by January. Those scholarships would help to promote the seafarer"s profession.

Tatjana Krilić explained that the number of foreign vessel inspections in Croatian ports was much higher than the average number of inspections in ports of the Paris MOU, emphasizing that improvements were showing in the status of the Croatian flag on the Paris MOU list.
