European Union member states and countries in the Danube River basin on Wednesday adopted a draft action plan for the development of inland navigation in the EU including recommendations for a larger use of the Danube and inland waterways so as to reduce road transport.

The draft action plan which will be sent to the EU Council of Transport Ministers, contains six items regulating the creation of more favorable conditions for transport services, the modernization of the fleet, the promotion of knowledge about internal navigation, and the development of the infrastructure and inland navigation projects.

The document was drawn up at an International Conference in Vienna which pooled about 300 participants, including Croatian officials who proposed better connections between the Danube and the Adriatic Sea. (Hina)
