Spanish national carrier Iberia will introduce flights from Zagreb to Madrid and back twice weekly, on Saturdays and Sundays, from July 4 to September 20, and possibly beyond that date if the results are good, Iberia officials announced at a press conference in Zagreb on Thursday.

The service will be operated by an Airbus A-319 aircraft, which can carry 141 passengers.

Iberia reckons that the service will be used not just by tourists, but also by business people and Croatian expatriates flying from Croatia to Latin America.

Iberia will continue flights from Madrid to Dubrovnik, which were introduced last year. Those flights will operate three times a week -- on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays -- from June 16 to September 29.

Iberia, the fourth largest European airliner, reported earnings of EUR 5.45 billion in 2008, with a net profit totalling EUR 32 million.
