E-Government Day at the Zagreb Fair

The E-Government Day Conference was held today within the INFO Fair – presenting the realisation of the Program E-Croatia 2007 - 38 project aimed to achieve the informatization of the Croatian society.

At the same time occured the exhibition 'Croatia on its way to an information society', which presented the best Croatian e-practice by introducing 25 different organizations.

The State Secretary for the Central State Administrative Office for e-Croatia, Miroslav Kovačić, explained that the goal of this exhibition was to present projects directed toward the promotion of the  of the public sector activities, and not so much State government. They wanted to give a cross-section and broader picture on what the State and the civil society were doing in the field of informatization.

He reminded that recently they had introduced e-regos as well as announcing the presenting of cadastral books in electronic form. Talking about some projects of the State government, he underline that the project e-VAT was still in its beginners phase.

Offering an overview of his office's recent activities, Kovačević stated the first two years had been dedicated to the development of infrastructure, and that the launching of services had opened a path for future improvements.

Kovačić said that the number of broadband users had increased, but those figures were still not satisfying. He explained that they would work on the growth of those user numbers, for it was their goal that Croatia at the moment of its joining the EU should have the same number of broadband users as the EU.

He also reminded that at the moment 1.7% of the total Croatian population were broadband users. The average percentage in 25 EU countries was 7%, and in 15 old EU countries 12%. The new EU countries register an average of 2.2%.

Kovačić emphasized that the Internet should develop its contents in order to attract users, but that the mobile phone technology should also be used for various services, since the mobile phone is very present in the lives of those Croatian citizens who are not Internet users. (Hina)
