Dugo Selo - Krizevci railway to get EUR 145 mln from EU for upgrade

The European Commission on Monday released a decision on financing the improvement of rail transport between Krizevci and Dugo Selo with 145 million euros from the Cohesion Fund in the 2014-2020 financial framework."EUR 145 million from the Cohesion Fund is being invested in improving rail transport between Krizevci, in the centre of the country, and Dugo Selo, close to Zagreb. This section of the railway is part of the Mediterranean corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which connects Croatia to its Hungarian and Slovene neighbours, and Southern Europe to Eastern Europe," the EC said on its web site.

"The EU is investing in better connections both within Croatia and with its neighbours within a strategic, pan-European transport network. This project, which promotes clean transport within the country, will contribute directly to Croatia's economic growth by facilitating both the transport of goods and tourism. The project includes the upgrade and doubling of tracks between the two cities, improvements to railway stations, the modernisation of the telecommunication and signalling system and the construction of adjacent road infrastructure (bridge, tunnels, roads) to ensure better access to the railway network," Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu, said.

The project was initially approved in 2013 and about 20 million euros was absorbed from the 2007-2013 financial framework.

Today's decision rounds off the financing for the project.

Works on the railway commenced late 2016 and are expected to be completed by 2020.
