Croatia introduces age limit regulations for merchant vessels

The Croatian Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Božidar Kalmeta decided to introduce regulations controlling the age of vessels entered into the ships' register in Croatia, his ministry reported on Monday.

The adoption of the regulations was part of efforts to improve the status of the Croatian flag on the Grey List of the Paris Memorandum and to adjust the relevant Croatian legislation to the European Union acquis communautaire.

The Paris Memorandum was signed by EU member-states in 1982 with the aim of improving the safety of human life at the sea and enhancing environmental protection.

The new Croatian regulations stipulate that passenger ships cannot be older than 25 years at their first entry into the national register of vessels.

The age limit for cargo vessels during their first registration is 20 years.

For fishing vessels the limit is 15 years.
