Today on the motorway Rijeka – Zagreb, the second (right) tube of the tunnel Veliki Gložac will be broken through. The tunnel is 1.126 meters long, it is located on the route Vrbovska – Bosiljevo and its total value mounts up to HRK 95.34 million (VAT not included), reported the company 'Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb’ (ARZ).

Within the second phase of construction works for the motorway Rijeka – Zagreb, the contract for the building of the right tube (tunnel Veliki Gložac) was signed with the business association 'Viadukt' and 'Hidroelektra – civil engineering' in March. The defined period of time was 24 months.

The construction activities are financed with help of a loan secured by the German bank for development 'Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau' (KfW). Those means represent the saved amount of money during the I. phase of construction works.

The route of the motorway, in that area, is passing through very difficult terrain. In order to maintain the set time frame the necessary mining activities went on for the whole summer.

During all construction and mining activities, in the tunnels Čardak and Veliki Gložac, all traffic was redirected to the parallel tubes. Those were first such construction cases in Croatia.

The describes construction activities are part of the second phase (II A), which represents an enlargement of the route Kupjak – Vrbovsko (3 km) and part of the route Vrbovsko – Bosiljevo (8.5 km).

The II A phase is 11.5 km long, including two tunnels (Čardak and Veliki Gložac), three viaducts (Zečeve Drage and Osojnik) with the related route. The objects themselves are 3.5 km long (33% of II A routes).

Part of the II A construction activities will be finalized by 2006, i.e. the tunnel Čardak and the main route Kupjak – Vrbovsko, the main route Vrbovsko – Bosiljevo (4.6 km) as well as the viaduct Osojnik - will be open for traffic, next year.

The enlargement of the rest of the motorway Rijeka – Zagreb, the route between Kikovica and viaduct Stara Sušica (44 km long), represents a part of the so-called II B phase and will be finalized by 2008. (Hina)
